The Creative Frog

Once upon a time there was a frog-like species happily hopping around in a South American rain forest.  The little frogs had few cares in the world, but one they did have was that they kept getting eaten by larger predators.
As the eons went by, some of the frogs in the species got a little tired of their kind being eaten all the time, so they decided to develop a poison that would make their predators ill or dead. So they did.
Only as fast as they could evolve to make the poison, they killed themselves off, without any predators involved at all. They were not immune to their own poison!
So, they quit making themselves poisonous and embarked on making themselves immune to the poison they would one day start producing.
There arose a problem, though. There was no “evolutionary” reason to create immunity to a poison that did not exist. So they could not evolve the necessary immunity.
Looking ahead a few million years, the South American forest was full of the descendants of this species hopping around poisoning predators and not killing themselves in the process.
It can’t help but be wondered how this strange circumstance came to be. Evolution certainly does not explain it. Somebody must have already thought of the problem.
God just smiled.
