The Lady of Revelation

I heard two "theologians" discussing The Book of the Revelation.

(That's right...it's not Revelations it is ONE revelation, and that is THE key to figuring it out..the only key.)

One of them proclaimed that the woman mentioned represents (he said "Is") Israel. The other insisted she was (is or will be)the Church.

The discussion got spicy.

Scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments were bandied about.

(As we all know, the one who can quote the most scripture is the winner.)

But they were neck-in-neck. All even up on scripture references. A tie.

So they resorted to reason.

She was pregnant and the church is a virgin, so she could not represent the church. But, came the reply, the context points us to the church, not Israel.

I left the area before I could tell which one won. I suspect they beat each other up and both ended up in jail to cool off. (Not).

So what's the answer? Who IS she, anyway?

I have my own thoughts on the matter, but you could not pry them out of me with a cattle prod. I ain't tellin,' and you ain't guessin'.

Besides...either way it misses the whole point. The whole point!

What does (pardon me, doth) it profit a man if he gain the whole argument and loses the whole point?

See, The Book of the Revelation is not about candle sticks, pregnant ladies, dragons, mysterious numerology, trumpets sounding, who the witnesses are, the beast of the sea, the three angels, the seven plagues or bowls, the woman on the beast, or the fall of Babylon.

Oh,it contains all of those things.

But The Book of the Revelation is about the magnificent, marvellous, wonderful, powerful, beautiful, astonishing, startling, amazing, extraodinary, unusual, surprising, splendid, excellent, brilliant, dazzling, majestic, indescribable King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus.

Knowing who the pregnant woman is might be interesting. It might make me feel smart.

But the next day, I would get up, go to work, do my job, come home, kiss my wife, cook supper and go to bed (after blogging, of course).

In short, it would not make one hill of beans difference in my life. Not one.

But knowing the one about whom The Book of the Revelation is written...that makes all the difference in the world...no, not just in all the world, for all eternity.

So theologians and pseudo-theologians have your fun. Try to figure out the unfigurable. Argue until you are blue in the face (what in the world does that mean, anyway?). Hold your Bull Sessions (Did you ever wonder what the abbreviation of Bull Session stands for?----hint: B.S.---Barbara Streisand).

Puff and pontificate. Look smug. Look intense and sincere.

Pause for dramatic emphasis so we will all understand to what heights your great knowledge has brought us.

As for me...I think I will just cuddle up in the arms of the One who gave His life that I might live and enjoy Him.

Come on up. There's always room for one more.

Joe, Great post! I never heard anyone say that they thought the pregnant lady was the church, hmmm...

This is something that always kind of irks (only slightly) me, though:

... that's right...it's not Revelations it is ONE revelation...

... when Bible believers even call it RevelationS. It says right in the beginning that it is the Revelation of Jesus Christ, Him revelaed. Beautiful!

Great post Joe!
The book of revelation is indeed wonderful, for the very fact as you mentioned that it is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Reading it in that context will certainly help many stay a good course and not wander off into the many fanciful interpretations that come along. Jesus, it's all about Jesus!

Wonderful post Joe! I think that we as a people (and I include myself in this too) tend to get a little to carried away with wanting to know things like who the lady might be, or what some object represents, etc.

You are right, this is all about Jesus. Some day we might know what the symbols in the Book meant, but maybe by then it won't matter so much to us...afterall, we will be with Jesus, and it will be all about Him then too...

I'm with you joe....I've got my opinion on that too....but I'm keepin' it too myself (I'm learnin')

Great post, and I always correct the revelationS people :-)

Joe,
It's akwardly funny how God works in people. You put a light twist in my deep analyzation of theology day. =-)
Tonight I attended church (usually I work on wed. and attend college and career on thur.) only to find that I know absolutely jack squat about reformed theology! As I was discussing it with my pastor, I was wondering things like: "does it really matter anyway? what impact will either view have on my life style and obedience to God? does it change the salvation message? etc..."
I agree with you. Sometimes it just doesn't matter. We get entangled in such trivial mind pursuits. What matters is that the message goes forth and that we move forward in becoming more like our Savior!! Praise be to our Lord God and Father!

You hit me where I needed to be hit. No more participation in the Calvinism debates! I now stand convicted. You are right to have posted this message. My eyes belong on Jesus only.

You've hit the nail on the head, Joe. It is THE revelation of Christ, and nothing else matters...

... so who do you think she is, really? C'mon...

Hi Joe,
Great insight..Thank you

Christ is my master

I am answerable to God, not to anyone else . I will stand before God's judgment to give an account of my own conduct( AS A TEACHER), not someone else's! .

Therefore I should live with a view to pleasing God .

I should be determined not to put obstacles in the way of another follower of Christ , or to cause them distress by what I do.

It pleases God when the stronger follower voluntarily gives up some of his or her freedom so the weaker follower will not be tripped up.

To everyone: I have loved your spirit in all of this. (I'm NOT going to tell you who I think she is, though). I also love the depths to which we can go when studying scripture...including the candlesticks, dragons, etc. I just hate when it becomes contentious and the attitude becomes "my way of the highway." I see that at some of the more "firey" sites and it makes me very sad.

I love that. :) Envisioning that always gets me through.
